Update on
Relocation of the Shooting Range
The
old shooting range was in operation at the same location without any problems
for over 40 years. Unfortunately the old shooting range is no more and
has been permanently closed. The land that it was on is within the area
Airdrie aims to annex into its city boundaries.
The
Airdrie Revolver and Pistol Club has been invited to
relocate the shooting range to a new location which is approximately 16 km.
east and 5 km. north of Airdrie. We propose to build a 50 meter pistol
and 100 – 200 yard rifle range with 12 positions each at this location.
The RCMP Canadian Firearms Program Range Officer has viewed the proposed new
shooting range site and advised that firearms can be safely discharged at this
location if it is built to meet their Range Design and Construction
Guidelines. We are in the early stages of preparing the submission of the
Rezoning Designation Application and Development Permit required by the
Municipal District of Rocky View for the shooting range to be relocated and
built on this site. This is a six to eight month process. If
approval is given this will be a welcome major project for the club and its
members. At this early stage we do not have an estimate of costs but it
is obvious the club will need all the help and financial support we can get.
We
appreciate the support of members that have continued renewing their
memberships and encourage other past members to do so. When we know we
have the needed approvals from the Municipal District of Rocky View we will
start accepting applications from new members again. Since we are
planning a pistol and rifle range in the community in close proximity to
Calgary there is the potential for membership to grow rapidly and there may be
a need at some point to consider capping the membership.
Updates
on our progress will be provided when there are changes and developments worth
reporting.
